BBB, AARP To Host Twin Ports Scam Jam

Better Business Bureau® of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) is partnering with AARP Minnesota, AARP Wisconsin and several other area organizations to offer Twin Ports Scam Jam on Wednesday, September 20, at Clyde Iron Works in Duluth, Minnesota. This free, interactive event aimed at educating seniors and caregivers about scams currently impacting the marketplace takes place from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is open to the public.

“This is the sixth Scam Jam event in the last two years and we’re so pleased to bring this event to the Twin Ports,” said Lisa Jemtrud, Director of BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota’s Educational Foundation, the Institute for Marketplace Ethics. “We’re expecting another highly successful and informative event for area seniors.”

Nationwide, con artists steal billions of dollars from seniors every year. The good news is that there are many organizations and agencies working hard to educate the public about these schemes and help them protect their finances from the bad guys.

Presenters at Twin Cities Scam Jam include: AARP Minnesota, Better Business Bureau, Minnesota Department of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission, Elder Justice Minnesota & Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions.

“In Minnesota, older adults are prime targets for both financial and health care fraud. You may be solicited by phone, mail and door to door for everything from investment opportunities to mortgage deals, to special health care offers and it is often difficult to tell the difference between the legitimate and the illegitimate,” said Will Phillips Director for AARP Minnesota.

Attendees will be able to visit with professionals representing local community organizations in our mini-exhibit hall starting at 8:30 a.m. and during program breaks. Previous Scam Jam locations include: Minneapolis, Rochester, Fargo, Sartell and Brooklyn Center.
